CWU Greater Mersey Amal Lay Flowers At Liverpool Event

Amongst the many flowers reefs laid today, on International Worker's Memorial Day in Liverpool was CWU's Merseyside Branch, the Greater Mersey Amal Branch consisting of postal, telecom, and financial services workers employed in Liverpool.

In what was a solemn ceremony with the largest number of attendees in recent years, Jamie McGovern laid down his Branch's memorial flowers looked on by fellow Branch members, Tony Rimmer and Chris Ingram.

With other Branch officials unable to attend due to the Unions Annual Conference taking place this week in Bournemouth, Jamie as a member of the IWMD Merseyside Organising Committee managed to make it back in time for today's event.

With IWMD events taking place at the same time in the North West, Manchester, Burnley and in Preston at the weekend; the Liverpool event had also a very significant meaning for the family of one of the City's great trade unionists.

As readers of this website will know, today was the day when a new IWMD memorial plaque was finally laid in it's rightful place adjacent to the memorial to those building the first Mersey Tunnel who lost their lives in doing so.

Today's memorial plaque is the first in the City that commemorates ALL workers who died in the course of their work or indeed through ill-health caused by their work; in the numerous industries on Merseyside.

The significance of the new plaque is that it contains the words of Tony Mulhearn speaking at 2019's IWMD event, which was his last.
